Am I eligible for Social Security Disability benefits?
If you don’t know, “Social Security Disability Insurance” is when the government provides the person with the disability money to be able to sustain their life as they are not able to work or who can only do limited work. Therefore allowing them to still be able to have a functioning household.
Not everyone with a disability may qualify for this though. There are a few requirements that must be met before you may get these benefits.
Some of which are:
- Be physically disabled
- Have mental disabilities
- Specific conditions (such as being blind) can also qualify
- The condition must be expected to last, at a minimum, 12 months and/or lead to death
- Your income must be limited or very low
There are a few more requirements past those listed, but many of those are specific for each case.
As we have spoken about before, not everyone is the same and each person has their own storyline that they live each day. This can alter if you can or want to apply for SSDI.
Another thing to consider is your work history. You must hit certain requirements to apply for this Insurance. Basically it is showing the government that you are a hard worker and you are reliable so that they aren’t just throwing the money away. It also helps to show the government that you are truthful.
You must provide things such as:
- Job title
- How long you worked there
- Business type
- Beginning and end dates
- Rate of pay
- Explanation as to why you had to stop working that applies to your disability
- Physical and mental demands of the job
Describing your jobs within the last five years will help the Social Security Association help to guide you and your case to the best of their abilities. This may be a decision that will allow you to keep working, just at a lower rate, or it may be that you don’t work at all.
If you are worried about your age and whether or not you can even think about applying, the age range that these benefits can be issued out to are 18 to 65. In some cases the SSDI can be used past the age of 65, but that is different for each person.
Just as we have talked about, no matter what age you are, you must submit the required material and follow the instructions given to you. This is imperative because all of the information that the SSA asks for from you will help them decide what benefits and assistance they will allow you.
SSDI is a very helpful thing for those who have disabilities and struggle to work fully or at all. If you think this may be something you can qualify for, look into it to see what qualifications you meet and apply. Be honest and divulge all the information required of you to start this process to help you and your lifestyle.
